Toys & Games marketplace management

Toys sell most in the weeks before the holidays, and marketplaces set extra requirements for selling them then. We prepare the safety documents, the stock and the advertising well before the season arrives.

Toys & Games marketplace management

What makes toys and games different

Safety proof, holiday rules and a compressed season.

  • Safety testing

Toys for children 12 and under must meet the US toy safety standard, backed by third-party testing and a Children's Product Certificate. Documents are kept current for every product.

  • Holiday selling rules

Amazon has applied extra requirements to toy sellers in the final months of the year. We check the current rules early so listings are not held back in the busiest weeks.

  • Gift-season demand

A large share of annual toy sales comes in a few weeks. Stock, deals and advertising budgets are planned months in advance.

Who buys toys and games, and where

Gift givers in November, parents in between.

  • Amazon in the fourth quarter, by the gift guide

Toys sell on Amazon in the fourth quarter above all, to gift givers who search by age, by licence and by the lists Amazon publishes. A toy without reviews and a sales history by October is a toy competing on price.

  • Walmart's toy aisle online

Walmart is one of the largest toy retailers, and its marketplace buyer expects store prices and the store's holiday range. A brand that sells in the store's category builds on that demand; a new brand builds it on Amazon first.

  • TikTok Shop and the viral toy

A toy that plays on camera sells on TikTok Shop through creators and unboxings, often before it has an Amazon history, and the demand spills onto Amazon as searches for the brand's name.

The rules that decide a toy listing

Testing, warnings and Amazon's holiday selling requirements.

  • Toy safety testing

A toy for children under twelve is tested to the toy safety standard by an accepted laboratory and carries its Children's Product Certificate, and the listing states the age grading the test covered. The certificate is the document the marketplace asks for first.

  • Warnings on the page

Small parts, magnets, batteries and cords each carry the cautionary statements the rules require, and the listing's warnings, the packaging's warnings and the certificate agree. The marketplaces display them, and a missing one is a removal.

  • Amazon's holiday selling rules

Amazon applies extra requirements to toy sellers who fulfil their own orders in the holiday season, based on order volume, defect rates and on time delivery in the months before. A seller fulfilled toy business earns its fourth quarter in the summer.

How we run Toys & Games accounts

The services a toy brand uses most: the certificate and the warnings kept in order, the fourth quarter planned from July, and the advertising held for November.

The calendar and the economics of toys

One quarter, planned from July.

  • The fourth quarter is the year

Most toy volume lands between Black Friday and Christmas, so inbound shipments meet Amazon's holiday deadlines, the advertising budget is held for November, and the reviews November needs are earned on the summer's sales.

  • The listing built for the giver

A gift buyer needs the age, the play pattern, what is in the box and whether batteries are included, in the first screen, with video. A parent already knows; the giver is the buyer who converts on clarity.

  • January and the returns

Returns arrive in January, some opened and unsellable, and unsold stock rolls into the year's storage fees. The post holiday plan decides removals, markdowns and next year's order before the fees start.
