TikTok Shop Main Image Rules from 1 September 2026: Front View, White Background, and the Five-Image Good Tier

TikTok Shop's Product Listing Policy took effect on 1 September 2026 with a tighter main image rule, and its listing quality guidelines of July 2026 put a floor of five images under the Good tier. The spec in TikTok's words, how it differs from Amazon's, what the tiers change, and a main image process that passes both.

Most brands arrive on TikTok Shop with the image set they built for Amazon, and most of it transfers. The main image is the slot where it does not quite, because TikTok's rule for it is written differently from Amazon's and is enforced through a different mechanism: a listing quality tier that a thin image set cannot climb out of.
This is TikTok Shop's main image rule as its Product Listing Policy states it from 1 September 2026, the listing quality tiers its July 2026 guidelines describe, the places where an Amazon-compliant image fails a TikTok check, and a process for producing a main image that passes both without shooting twice.

The rule, from 1 September 2026

Two sentences from the Product Listing Policy carry the whole requirement. "The main image must show the front physical view of the product." And: "The main image must have a pure white background and be an objective and straightforward representation" of the product for sale.
Three more rules apply to the main image because they apply to every image. "All product images must not include any added logos, text, borders, watermarks, or graphics." "Placeholders and digital renderings of a product are not allowed." And images must show only what the customer will receive: no props that are not in the box, no bundle that is not the bundle for sale.
The technical floor is low and precise: up to nine square images, each at least 600 by 600 pixels, in colour (black and white images are prohibited), and one video of up to 5MB. A listing that breaks the policy faces the four actions the policy names: Account Health Rating point deductions, listing removal, revocation of selling privileges, and refunds to customers.

The tiers, from July 2026

TikTok Shop's listing quality guidelines, dated 8 July 2026, grade a listing into three tiers. Poor is a listing with insufficient images and quality problems. Fair is a listing whose images meet the essential standards. Good requires "five or more" high-resolution images, with the other elements of the listing also in order. For the main image the guidelines repeat the policy in softer language: it should clearly show the product, avoid watermarks, borders and promotional text, be above 600 by 600, sit on a high-quality background with white recommended, and not be blurry, corrupted or a digital rendering.
Where the two documents differ, the policy governs. The guidelines recommend a white background; the policy requires a pure white one for the main image. Treat the recommendation as the requirement it is.
Two more tier rules catch imported image sets. Mosaics, several views combined in one image, are to be avoided, and a mosaic may never contain more than nine images. And no duplicate main images: a variant family that reuses one hero photograph across every colour is a family of duplicates. The tier also has a ceiling that images cannot lift: without the category-specific information TikTok asks for (how to use, materials, specifications, sizing, model display images and so on, varying by category), a listing is capped at Fair however good its photographs are.
TikTok says listing quality affects customer experience, brand trust and conversion. It does not publish how the tier affects search ranking, and nothing here claims that it does. How to sell on TikTok Shop covers how the listing is found; the tier is about what happens once it is.

Where an Amazon main image fails a TikTok check

Amazon's main image rule, set out in Amazon's 2026 image requirements, asks for a pure white background, the product filling most of the frame, no text or graphics, and a resolution above a minimum, with suppression from search as the penalty. Most of that transfers directly. The differences are specific.
The front view. Amazon permits an angled hero shot. TikTok's policy says the front physical view, so a three-quarter angle that leads on Amazon is the wrong first image on TikTok and belongs in slot two.
The square. Amazon's main image can be any rectangle; TikTok's images are square. A tall product cropped to a square either loses its ends or sits small in the frame, and the honest answer is a second crop from the same shoot rather than a stretched one.
The penalty. Amazon suppresses the listing until the image is fixed. TikTok takes Account Health Rating points, which persist, and how the Account Health Rating works explains why a points deduction is a worse outcome than a suppression that lifts in a day.
The count. Amazon's rules are about the main image. TikTok's tier is about the set, and five is the floor for Good. A brand that exports a three-image Amazon listing to TikTok exports a Fair listing.

A main image process that passes both

Shoot the product once, on a pure white sweep, at a resolution well above either platform's minimum, from the front and from the three-quarter angle. Crop the front view square for TikTok and keep the three-quarter angle as Amazon's hero. Remove nothing in software that was in the frame and add nothing that was not; the renderings rule and Amazon's accuracy rule say the same thing. Keep the file names and the raw files, because a dispute over an image is settled by showing the original.
Then fill the set. The five-image floor is easier than it sounds when each image answers one question, which is the method in product photography that sells: the product alone, the product in scale, the product in use, what is in the box, the detail that decides the purchase. On TikTok none of those images may carry text, so the answers are in the photograph or in the video and the description. Setting up TikTok Shop as a brand covers where that description and the category attributes go, which is what lifts the tier past Fair.

What we do with it

We design main images to the strictest rule in the set of marketplaces a product sells on, so one shoot serves every slot: the front view for TikTok, the hero for Amazon, the square crops, the white sweep, the files kept. That is the work of our main image design service. If your TikTok listings were built by exporting from Amazon, a review of the main image and the image count against the September policy is a short job, and the tier it lifts is the one shoppers see first.
